The 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place on September 22 at the famous Châtelet Theater in Paris, where the final list of nominees has been officially unveiled.
The list announced by France Football included 30 players competing for the most prestigious award in the world of soccer, including eight players from Premier League clubs, reflecting the strength of the competition this year.
Messi and Ronaldo missing from the 2025 Ballon d’Or list
The shortlist for this year’s World Player of the Year award saw the exclusion of two of soccer’s greatest legends, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Even though they both won international titles with their respective national teams recently, it wasn’t enough to keep them on the shortlist. For a number of reasons
1- The players play outside of Europe
2- They haven’t won any trophies this year with their clubs
3- Their individual numbers weren’t enough

How is the winner of the Ballon d’Or 2025 selected?
The winner of the 2025 Ballon d’Or is determined by a vote of 100 journalists, representing the top 100 countries as ranked by FIFA.
Evaluation and nomination period
The performance of the players during the period from August 1, 2024 to July 31, 2025 is evaluated, and based on this performance, the nominees are selected for voting.
How to vote and distribute points
Each journalist chooses their 5 favorite players and ranks them in order of preference:
- The first player gets 6 points
- Second player on 4 points
- Third player on 3 points
- Fourth player on 2 points
- Fifth player on one point
In the end, the player with the highest total points after all the votes have been tallied is crowned the winner of the Ballon d’Or.
New changes to the announcement ceremony
The 2025 edition saw a significant change in the way the winner will be announced. There will be no pre-interviews with the winning player before the official announcement, making the moment when the winner is revealed even more exciting, as players will only know the results of the voting when it is announced.
